Autumn 1

Welcome back Parks! 

Below is Autumn 1 overview for parents and grandparents to read through to support learning at home. 

Autumn 1 overview

Year 2 have been looking at decay and so we had a little experiment with one of our carrots and saw what decay actually looks like today after a week. 

Islam: 

 

Year1 and 2 have been exploring the Islamic faith, and we have looked closely at prayer and compared it to prayer within the Christian faith. 

Paint: 

The reception children explored using paint and mixing colours. 

Forest school: 

A lovely Forest school session. The children had the chance to light the campfire they had. The children also made pancakes and got to try their cooking as well. 

Maths:

Reception children enjoying their maths. We have focused on numbers 1-5. 

Art: 

Children followed step by step instructions to draw a flower and an elephant. This was a fantastic session which allowed the children to use their listening skills as well as thier art skills.  

Harvest in church:

Wow! We had a lovely Harvest service in church led by Fr. Julius. Parks' class sharing their harvest basket paintings. 

Prayer:

Parks and Angelou class came together to work alongside each other to discuss prayer what it is and how we structure a prayer. We made prayer hands and decorated them to help us remember who we pray for and then thought about how we can start prayers in different ways. 

Outdoor learning: 

Children have really enjoyed being outside now the weather is a little drier. The children have really loved the reading shells, enjoying getting wrapped up and comfy and looking at a story together. 

Phonic:

 

Making letters with pipe cleaners and ply dough as well as identifying the sound each letter makes and the letters name. 

Science:

Yr2s put out their bird fat balls for their science experiment of which food the birds like best. We await to see the results on Monday. 

Computing: 

Year 1 and 2 have been working on computers or laptops log on and off to develop their independence with these skills whilst talking about how to keep safe when using these devices, such as, not sharing or saving passwords and how to log off. Reception have been looking at different purposes of technology and having a go at taking photo on i-pad, programming Earl and Bee Bot as well as using the interactive board to mark make and complete phonic games on Active Learn. 

Music:

We have been looking at pulse and what pulse means in music and also  our pulse in our body. 

Maths:

Reception maths 

We have been working on recognising numbers 1-5 and 1-10 and then putting them in the correct order to create a number line as well as, making image sout of our maths resource numicon and counting how much our image is worth. 

Year 1 maths looking at greater than and smaller than. Ordering numbers from greatest to smallest or smallest to greatest. 

Science:

Wow what amazing science! Year 2 children have been looking at food chains and their experiment was to see which fat ball the birds would prefer to eat, the seeds or the calci worms. Year 1s are comparing animals looking at what body parts which are the same which are different and what their purpose is. 

History: Changes overtime

Thank you to parents and grandparents for sharing some of their old toys with us. The children loved exploring these and discussing the differences between their special teddies. 

 

All children had a great go at talking to the rest of the class about their favourite teddy bear. 

Forest school:

 

 

Although it rained, the reception children had a great time in the eco garden. They peeled apples, played in the mud kitchen, used the pulley and helped to get apples from the apple tree. We had a great time.

Computing: 

 

Reception children were looking at different types of technology. We had a go at taking pictures of interesting things around the classroom with an I pad. We noticed that we had computers, I pads, laptops in the classroom and we discussed about keeping passwords safe and not sharing them with anyone.

Phonic:

 

Wow! Amazing phonic work using play dough to make the sounds we have learnt so far and then to form them in our exercise books as well. Well done Reception!

Art spiral snails: 

The children have used what they have learnt about drawing spirals. The children have applied this to their snail drawings.  

Number work: 

Number work outside. Can we spot the number around us, can we order them,  can we say the number we jump on and can we make something with a particular amount of objects.  

Phonic: 

Reception children have had a lot of fun learn the first 3 sounds S, A,T we ahve chalked them and created a jumnping ladder of sound buttons when a letter is jumped on you have to say the sound. We have introduced letter names and sounds they make. 

Science: 

Year 1 children are looking at senses and so we looked at the sense of smell the children had 5 items to smell and they had to guess what it was and record their thoughts in a table. The children then shared their ideas and we recorded the correct items the children smelt in the pots. 

Art: 

We had a great time exploring large body movements to create spirals and then looked at Kolams. ‘Every morning at sunrise all across Southern India women practice the ancient art of drawing kolam on the thresholds of their properties. A physical form of prayer and symbol of protection, a daily exercise, and a moment of intense concentration and meditation, drawing kolam is an important household ritual.

Forest school:

The reception children had a great time at forest school this week.

 

Recognising numbers:

Reception have been focusing on recognising numbers 1-5 and 1-10. The children have been on a number hunt in the outdoor provision, made number lines as our numbers were mixed up and needed sorting, counted beads to add to our strings which also practised our fine motor and hand eye co-ordination. The children have also had time to practise writing the numbers they know on the playground in chalk as well as in their books developing their pincer pencil grip. Year 2 Maths:

Year 2 children have recapped ten frames, part whole models, number bonds to 10 and then focused in on using base ten and how these resources can help us. This has also been supporting writing our two digit numbers in the correct order. We have also been practising our number formation as well. 

Art work spirals: 

As a whole class we had lots of fun creating large scale and smaller scale drawings of spirals. We talked about using our whole body, mind and hearts in our art work. the children discussed who they might create a piece of art for. Then the year 1 and 2 children looked at the artist Molly Haslund and then went on to look at Kolams created each morning in entrance ways in some parts of India. These spiritual pieces of art work are created across the world but we focused in on India with our link school being in Kolkata. 

Reception role play cafe:

Receptions had a great time exploring our role play area which we have set up as a cafe. 

PE:

Great first PE session of the year. 

Year 1 Science Parts of animals:

The children had lots of fun identifying external body parts and then playing a game of guessing the body part by describing it and then we played yes and no game to develop our questioning skills. 

Little Red Riding Hood:

We had a visitor in class (Little Red Riding Hood) and the class had lots of questions for her such as, why do you wear a red cape? We then gave each child in the class a character from the Traditional Tale, and we paired up and asked and answered questions as that character. 

Acting the story (Traditional Tale) out:

The children acted the story out in groups and then they shared their version of the story with the rest of the class. 

Year 1 maths - sorting: 

We have been sorting objects in different ways, such as, by what they are  and by colour. 

Teamwork and communication skills: 

We completed a teamwork and communication game where children are placed into groups. Then, one by one, one person from each of the groups comes to have a look at a hidden object (a loge tower) and then that person has to go back to their group and explain one part of what they have seen to their peers who, as a team, have to draw that part and so on until the group has recreated the object. 

First day:

The children have had a lovely first day exploring the outdoor provision, working together as a team and investigating what is in our classroom and where it is.
